Many of the millions of pilgrims that visit the Harimandir Sahib every year do not realize that one of Amritsar’s finest architectural marvels and one of the Sikh religion's most poignant places of worship is just a short walk from the famous Harimandir Sahib. Built some two centuries ago, the Baba Atal Gurdwara is a touching commemoration of the young life of Baba Atal Rai, the son of Guru Hargobind. Its nine stories echo his nine years of life before his death in 1628.
Ramsar Sahib: Gurdwara Ramsar stands alongside the Ramsar Sarovar, the smallest of Amritsar's five holy Sarovar. Located near Chativind Gate, on the south-eastern side of the walled city of Amritsar, the present Gurdwara Ramsar is a small marble-lined hall topped by a gilded, fluted lotus dome. It was built in 1855, at the site of the original shrine, where long before the present Gurdwara was constructed. Guru Arjun Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru who was looking for a quiet spot away from the growing city of Amritsar, chose this site as the spot where the Guru Granth Sahib would take form.
Shaheeda Sahib: Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Sahib is the place where Baba Deep Singh Ji along with other Singhs achieved martyrdom fighting the Mughal forces who were disrespecting Sri Harmandir Sahib. The great Sikh scholar and martyr Baba Deep Singh was mortally wounded when the Afghan invader Ahmed Shah Abdali ordered the Harmandar Sahib blown up and the Sacred Tank filled in Although heavily outnumbered the Sikhs fought bravely. Baba Deep Singh Ji had vowed to die in the precincts of the Golden Temple. Baba Ji was still far from the town when during the battle, he was beheaded. A Singh standing close to Baba Ji when reminded Baba Ji of his pledge, such a miracle happened which had never happened in the world before. Baba Ji held his head in his left hand & with his right hand, he swayed the Khanda with such a force that the enemies got stunned and started fleeing. From the place where today stands the Gurdwara Sahib, Baba Deep Singh Ji threw his head which landed at Sri Harmandir Sahib.
